Run for the Hills!

Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to “Run for the Hills!” on Sat., May 3, at the third annual fun run/walk sponsored by the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA).

“Run for the Hills!” kicks off the first Flint Hills Day that includes food, geo caching and Indian dancing at Blue Earth Plaza, while the Discovery Center presents “Footsteps in the Flint Hills: Insectify.”

Proceeds from the race benefit “Solutions for Seniors”. Funds support essential services needed by many Kansas seniors and their caregivers such as in-home care services, Medicare counseling and more than 2,040 meals served every day at 41 seniors or delivered by volunteers to homes through Friendship Meals/Meals on Wheels.

The race will begin and end at the Blue Earth Plaza located outside of the Flint Hills Discovery Center, 315 S. 3rd St., Manhattan, KS. Registration begins at 7 am with the race starting at 8am. Awards and prizes will be given to the top finisher in the male and female categories. Medals will be given to the top male and female 5K finishers in each age group.

Flint Hills Day

Flint Hills Day is the celebration of the ecoregion and the culture and history of the Kaw Indian Nation. Activities outside the Discovery Center kick off at 7 a.m. with Run for the Hills fun run/walk, followed by a geocaching event from 10 a.m. to noon. Activities inside the FHDC from noon to 4 p.m. include: live raptor demonstration by Milford Nature Center, Kaw Nation displays and activities for all ages, music by “The Skirts,” food vendors and gift store displays. The North-Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, Inc., a private, non-profit organization, plans, coordinates and sponsors services across 18 counties in Kansas. This race benefits “Solutions for Seniors” provided by the NC-FH AAA. These solutions include Friendship Meals /Meals on Wheels, In-Home Care Services, Medicare Counseling and other essential services needed by many seniors and their caregivers.
41 Senior Centers serve 2,041 meals to seniors and caregivers each day.
Four Regional Offices provide Options Counseling, information & assistance and answers to questions.

Race options include a 5k run/walk. Awards presentation follows the finishing of the 5k. The race is open to everyone. Those under the age of 18 must have a guardian sign off on the waiver of liability portion in this brochure. Dogs, skateboards, roller skates and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the race course. The race will start and finish at the Blue Earth Plaza located outside of the Flint Hills Discovery Center, 315 S. 3rd Street, Manhattan, KS 66502.

MHS Dinner Theater GALA: “Barnyard”

A Dinner Theatre GALA for the community called BARNYARD that NHS is touring to Scotland this summer for the American High School Theatre Festival, part of the world’s largest Arts Festival,  the Edinbugh Fringe Festival.

The play was written for Manhattan High School drama students by MHS class of 1964 alum Richard Broadhurst, a California playwright who has worked with MHS playwrighting and acting students three times before now.

The fundraising performance will be May 16 at 7pm Rezac Auditorium.

Help renovate an 1887 building for a museum! The Arts & Memories Museum in northern Riley County is hosting a Quiz Bowl Tournament to raise funds to help renovate an 1887 native Kansas limestone building to be used as a new home for part of the museum’s items. The Quiz Bowl will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Nelson’s Landing in Leonardville, KS. The first round will begin at 11:30 a.m. Teams are needed, so please be sure to sign-up to play.
