ABC/Mark LevineEric Church might just be the last person you’d ever expect to see walking around in a Big Bird costume. But that’s exactly what happened his first year of college, as he and a group of friends went searching for costumes to wear to Halloween on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

“We end up finding…some hole in the wall place,” he recalls, “but they had the full costume, Sesame Street outfits. The real deal. The real ones, feathers and fur. We were Elmo, Cookie Monster and I was Big Bird, and Big Bird was the actual Big Bird. It’s about 7-foot-4, and you looked out of the body and then you had these straps that went on so that the head was a lot higher.”

But things got a little crazy once the partying kicked in, and Eric suffered a wardrobe malfunction.

“There’s a lot of beer involved in Franklin Street,” Eric explains. “So we get down there and as the night went on, my straps broke, so the head would pivot. And so I would be walking one way and the head would be facing the other…I didn’t know the head was on backwards. I had no idea. I see out of the body, so I’m just kinda walking around, y’know?”

He laughs, “The whole time, people would come up and start talking and going, ‘Hey, turn around.’ And I’d turn around, and they’d go, ‘No turn around.’ It was a mess!”

This week, Eric’s latest hit, “Round Here Buzz,” is just two steps away from entering country’s top ten.
