Blake didn’t know Pharrell and Gwen before they started filming the blind auditions a few weeks ago, and he’s impressed with Pharrell’s tactics to get the best contestants on his team.

“It’s like reverse psychology,” Blake explains. “He hits his button, and then almost begs the artist to go with another coach because he’s just not worthy of their talent and Blake and Adam and Gwen are just so good at what they do and he loves ’em. And next thing you know, these artists are like — they fall for it every time. It’s so frustrating.”

Blake admits he’d probably choose to be on Gwen Stefani’s team if he was a contestant on The Voice.

He says, “Gwen Stefani is Gwen Stefani. Who’s gonna look at her and not see that she’s just such an accomplished artist and what she’s done for women in music.”

Of course, Blake and Adam have become close friends in the past few years, and Blake considers them all very lucky to have this gig helping up-and-comers realize their dreams.

Says Blake, “We get to come in and share some of the knowledge that we’ve gathered over the years of just banging our heads against the wall and being lucky enough to make our dreams come true. To be able to pass some of that knowledge on to some of these people, it’s perfect.”

The Voice‘s seventh season premieres Monday night at 8 ET on NBC.
