2017 Sunflower State Games

The 28th annual Sunflower State Games will be held July 14th – 30th.  The Sunflower State Games is Kansas’ largest amateur sports festival.  With over 45 different events there is something for people of all ages and skill levels.  In 2017 they will be adding Cornhole (Bags) and Drone Racing to the list of events.  Registration for the Sunflower State Games opens on March 1st, deadlines to register vary for each sport.  Complete event information and registration procedures can be found at www.sunflowergames.com.

Arts in the Park @ City Park

Arts in the Park, Aloft Circus Arts, circus arts telling a story through performance,  will be held on Friday, July 14th at the Larry Norvell Band Shell in City Park at 8:00 pm.  This is a free event and open to the pubic.

Book Discussion Group @ Senior Center

The Manhattan Book Discussion Group and the VIP (Visually Impaired Group) Support Group will meet on Tuesday, July 18th in the Riley County Senior Center.  The Book Group will meet at 1:00.  The title this month is “When Breath Becomes Air” by Paul Kalanithi.  The VIP meeting will follow from 2:00 – 3:00.  The guest speaker will be Ed Chandler, son-in-law of one of the members.  He recently traveled to China with a group from K-State.  He will share highlights of his trip.  Join in and learn more about his experience in traveling in China.  Any questions, please contact Kathy at 539-1973.

Municipal Band Concert @ City Park

The Manhattan Municipal Band under the direction of Dr. Frank Tracz will conclude its 97th season with a final concert on Tuesday, July 18th at 7:30 pm at the City Park’s Larry Norvell Band Shell.  The concert will consist of favorite selections from the Summer Season including “A Dixieland Jam”, “Those Fabulous Oldies”, and movie themes from “James Bond” and “Star Trek”.  Bench seating is available or bring a lawn chair.

32nd Annual Prairie Run @ King Field House

Fort Riley’s 32nd annual 10-5-2 Prairie Run is Saturday, July 22nd at King Field House.  This event provides options of three different courses: a 10-mile, 5-mile or 2-mile race.  For active-duty Soldiers, the 10-mile race acts as a qualifier for Fort Riley’s team that will compete at the Army 10-Miler in Washington D.C. in October.  Races of all distances are open to both military and civilian runners.  These races are not fun runs, so no pets, strollers, baby joggers, skateboards, roller blades, motorized vehicles, bicycles or headsets will be allowed on the race course.  Registration is available online at riley.armymwr.com and currently costs $20.  The deadline to register online is July 21st.  Runners can register on race day at King Field House, between 5 and 5:45 am.  For more information about this event, contact the Fort Riley Sports Office at 785-239-3724.

Battle of the Badges @ St Thomas More

With lights flashing and sirens blaring, Manhattan police, fire and emergency medical services personnel often arrive first at emergencies, always ready to help.  Local first responders will also help endure blood is available during medical emergencies by partnering with the American Red Cross for the upcoming 14th annual Battle of the Badges blood drive, Monday, July 24th from 11:15 am to 6:30 pm and Tuesday, July 25th from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm at the St. Thomas More, 2900 Kimball Avenue.  During the annual Battle of the Badges blood drive, Riley county police Department, Riley county EMS and Manhattan fire department will compete to see who can recruit the most blood donors.  Everyone who comes to give can cast a vote to determine who will win this years bragging rights and trophy.  To make an appointment for the Manhattan Battle of the Badges, download the Red Cross Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Furniture Amnesty Day @ City Park

Furniture Amnesty Day is an annual event that allows local residents to donate furniture they no longer need so others can select from the donated goods for free.  The 2017 event is scheduled for Friday, July 28th in City Park.  To donate, you can drop off your furniture between 7 am and 4 pm on the day of the event in City Park. Or, if you live in Manhattan city limits, you can have your donation picked up.  You must fill out the online form or call 785-587-2404 by 5 pm July 26th to be on the collection route.  Furniture needs to be on the curb by 7 am July 28th.  Volunteers cannot assist with getting the furniture out of your home.  If you would like to select from the donated furniture, you’ll need to participate in the public sign-in, which begins at 8 am July 28th.  You will be able to choose from available time slots between noon and 4 pm.  Each household will be allowed to select 5 pieces of furniture.  You will need your own form of transportation to get the selected furniture to your home.

Free Cancer Screenings @ Dwight Library & Community Center

Local Masons are hosting free cancer screenings during Dwight’s Summerfest on Saturday, August 5th.  It will be held from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Dwight Library & Community Center.  The event is open to the public and will include free skin and prostrate cancer screenings, colon cancer home screening kits as well as BMI tests and facial sun damage assessments.  Diagnostic Imaging Center mammography services will also be available at the event.  Cost of a mammogram is covered for those who quality through the Early Detection Works program or have insurance coverage.  Otherwise, a fee may apply.  Participants can call 913-344-9989 to learn more or to pre-schedule a mammogram for August 5th.
