Dan + Shay Makes Chart History with Debut Album, “Where It All Began”

Warner Music NashvilleNew duo Dan + Shay have made country-music history just 14 months after their first meeting.  Their debut album, Where It All Began, bows at #1 on Billboard‘s Country Albums chart.  This feat makes them the first duo to debut at #1 on that tally since SoundScan began tracking sales digitally in 1991.  The project is also the highest-charting debut project released in 2014.

These impressive sales numbers mean fans are hearing their songs, and that’s music to Dan + Shay’s ears.

Shay Mooney tells ABC News Radio, “Everything kind of came together really quickly, and all these songs are kind of our babies, and we’re very proud of this.”

Duo partner Dan Smyers adds, “We’re proud to get the whole body of work out there and let people hear it from front to back.”

As for the plus sign in their name, Dan + Shay think most people have figured out that it’s pronounced “Dan and Shay” and not “Dan Plus Shay” by now.

Shay explains, “Yeah, in the beginning, it was definitely, people were just [like], ‘Is it ‘Dan Plus Shay?’ ’19 You-Plus-Me?’  So, people who really didn’t do the research, they would kind of mess it up sometimes.”

Dan + Shay continue introducing themselves to fans on the road opening for Hunter Hayes this spring. They play tonight in Southaven, Mississippi.

Toby Keith Surprised With Spirit of the USO Award in Las Vegas

Show Dog/UniversalToby Keith was surprised with the Spirit of the USO Award on Monday night in Las Vegas.  The presentation happened at the end of the taping for the upcoming TV special ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops.

According to The Tennessean, Toby just finished performing the final song of the night, “American Soldier,” when military personnel took the stage and made the announcement.  The honor recognizes Toby for playing more than 200 shows for more than 250,000 men and women in uniform and their families in the past decade.

Toby admits the award caught him off-guard.  He says, “I saw a need and a void the great Bob Hope left behind, and no one was filling it, but as hard as Big Dog Daddy tried, I couldn’t bring Marilyn Monroe.”

Toby will be featured in ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops, airing May 20 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.

Billy Currington Bounces Around with Brett Eldredge and Chase Rice

Mercury NashvilleWhile other artists may dread hitting the road for extended periods of time, Billy Currington confesses that touring suits his nomadic lifestyle just fine.

Yeah, [I’ve] been in Hawaii a little bit, Georgia, California, Key West, Florida. I’ve just been bouncing around,” he tells ABC News Radio. “Of course, now, I’m bouncing around wherever the tour goes, so that’s basically everywhere.”

And wherever his We Are Tonight tour takes Billy, his opening acts Brett Eldredge and Chase Rice are along for the ride.

“Those guys are so cool… They’re great guys to hang with, for one thing,” Billy says. “But they’re great openers for the crowd to get it ready for us to come out there. I mean, they amp everybody up so much. Of course, they come out during the show with us and make it special. I just couldn’t ask for better opening acts.”

Billy’s also been known to borrow from one of his heroes to keep the crowd on its toes.

Yeah, we do ‘Friends in Low Places,’” he laughs. “[I] love, love Garth Brooks, so we settled on that one, and it always goes over so good.”

This week, Billy and the boys stop in Kentucky and South Carolina, before heading to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for the Tortuga Music Festival on Saturday.
