Kelsea Ballerini Reveals the Moment She Knew Her Music Belonged in the Country Format

Black RiverKelsea Ballerini started writing songs as a pre-teen living on a farm in East Tennessee, but she had no idea where those songs might fit. The lyrics and melody didn’t sound like the pop music she listened to with her friends.

Kelsea tells ABC Radio, “What I was writing came out country just ’cause that’s who I am, but I did not listen to country music.”

That all changed when Kelsea heard Keith Urban‘s hit single “Stupid Boy.”

“I was like, ‘What is this?'” Kelsea says. “So, I went and got his record, Dixie Chicks and Sugarland and Taylor Swift. Those four records were my introduction to country music.”

Those four acts made Kelsea realize her musical home was just a few hours away in Nashville.

She says, “I remember listening to those [albums] and thinking, like, ‘I think it is kind of what I’m writing.’ Like, ‘I think this might be where it fits.’ And that was it. Then I was, like, all about country.”

Kelsea was so sure country would serve as her musical home, she convinced her family to move a few hours west to Nashville a few years ago.

Kelsea is a co-writer on her debut single, “Love Me Like You Mean It,” which went to #1 at country radio just last week. It’s included on her debut album, The First Time, on sale now.

Dierks Bentley Shares the Story Behind His Superstar Fishing Trip with Luke and Jason

CMADierks Bentley is sharing the details of his impromptu fishing trip with superstar pals Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean last week in Florida. All three of them happened to be in the Sunshine State at the same time, so Luke organized the get-together out on the water.

Dierks tells ABC Radio, “It was fun. We went down there and hit a little spot and caught our limit of red snapper and grouper and just had a good time hanging out.”

A photograph of Jason, Luke and Dierks holding up one of the fish they caught quickly racked up more than 25,000 likes on Instagram.

Says Dierks, “I put a picture on all the social stuff, and I think the fans kinda dug seeing the three of us hanging out.”

The day on the water was a rare treat for Jason, Luke and Dierks, too.

He adds, “[It’s] good to hang out with your guys you normally don’t see unless you’re on the road or an awards show”.

So, which one of them caught the biggest fish that day? Dierks says Luke’s son, Bo, won the day, reeling in a 21-pound red snapper.

“[Bo] might take home the trophy,” Dierks says with a laugh. “He’s like seven years old, and he was killing it out there.”

You can catch Dierks performing on Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular this Saturday night on NBC.
