ABC/Image Group LAWhile lots of folks are watching A Very Murray Christmas on Netflix since its release Friday, it turns out CMA country sensation Chris Stapleton is one of the people who can just hang out with Bill Murray himself. You see, Chris’s former band the Steeldrivers was on the soundtrack for the comedy legend’s 2010 film Get Low, and the actor recently turned out for a performance in Charleston, South Carolina.

“He’s an enthusiastic music lover, so he really elevated the crowd. He’s a bit of a hype man,” Chris tells Rolling Stone. “We hung out after the show, and it was very interesting. We went to the place next door and stayed till it closed. I was drinking bourbon, I think he was drinking wine. The conversation ran the gamut — it was the kind of thing that could take a turn at any moment. He has a lot of interesting philosophies.”

If you wonder what Murray’s like, Chris says you only need to envision his onscreen personas.

“If you can imagine a conversation with a compilation of all of those characters he’s played —  from Caddyshack to Lost in Translation — then you can imagine a conversation with him. I wasn’t gonna ask him for Caddyshack stories,” he quips.

Chris plays the John Lennon 75th Birthday Concert this weekend in New York City.
