Warner NashvilleAs Cole Swindell‘s lead single from his sophomore album closes in on the top five, he says it’s proof the time was right for him to release a thoughtful song like “You Should Be Here.” He hopes it’s also a little foretaste of the maturity fans will see on his second full-length project, which shares its title with his hit.
“I do think that it is kinda of a sign of what’s to come. I think it’s more mature than anything I’ve ever put out there, you know,” he reflects. “I think if I’d have put this song out first, nobody would’ve known my name. It might not have gotten a real chance, you know.”
While number ones like “Let Me See Ya Girl,” “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey,” and “Chillin’ It” may’ve laid the groundwork for “You Should Be Here”– Cole assures his fans that he’s not forsaking his more lighthearted side.
“That’s part of getting to make a second album. I mean, you’re getting to grow up — and there’s other songs that are deeper too. Not on this subject… You know, there’s still gonna be the fun stuff, but I just think it’s all about growing as an artist, and I think this album’s gonna show that.”
You Should Be Here, the album, will be available in stores and online May 6 — just before Cole heads out on the Dig Your Roots tour May 12 with Florida Georgia Line, The Cadillac Three and Kane Brown.
