Warner Music NashvilleCole Swindell’s “You Should Be Here” is not only his latest number one, it’s also a song that seems to take on new significance every time he sings it during a major career milestone — and his performance during this year’s CMA Music Festival was certainly no exception.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever [sung] it in an environment like this. Just singing it at sound check today, you can see right now that I have chills…thinking about it, because it’s not just my dad that I’m thinking of. I just wonder who they’re thinking of — who do they have tears in their eyes over that they wish could be here with us? And not just people that they’ve lost. What a song for CMA Fest!…It’s gonna be maybe the most special time I’ve ever played it.”

Saturday night’s capacity crowd agreed, lighting up Nissan Stadium with their cell phones as Cole performed the very personal song he wrote about missing his father.
