The Exxon Valdez, a supertanker loaded with 1,264,155 barrels of North Slope crude oil, ran aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska.
The 11.2 million gallons of oil spilled into the sea damaged up to fifteen hundred miles of shoreline. 300,000 birds were killed, 2,650 sea otters in Prince William Sound were killed. The spill was damaging to the south central Alaska’s fisheries, including the desecration of the local Herring population. (The Herring is a staple to 40 different native species, including the bald eagles, brown bears, seals, humpback whales and tufted puffins). Beyond animals, the local population suffered economic, social and psychological consequences that exist to this day. Some people don’t think the area will ever recover from this.
