ABC/Image Group LAOn Tuesday, Dierks Bentley released “Somewhere on a Beach,” the lead single from his forthcoming album, Black, announcing that the single’s title also would be the name of his new tour with Randy Houser and Cam. While discussing his new music, the Grammy nominee took time to remember Eagles founding guitarist and singer Glenn Frey, who died Monday at the age of 67. Dierks was in Los Angeles at the time, and the news came as a shock to him.
“I didn’t know that he was sick,” he says. “It was so sudden to me. It was just out of the blue, you know. ‘What?’ One of the greatest songwriters. It’s kind of weird to be in a world where one of the Eagles is not here. You just kind of always figured they’d be around.”
Growing up in Arizona, Dierks remembers his mom being a fan of the iconic country/rock band, but he says it was the 1994 CMA Album of the Year — the Eagles tribute album Common Thread — that really provided his education in the Eagles’ catalog.
“My mom loved the Eagles. But for me what really turned me on to the Eagles, and this is maybe sad to say, but that Common Thread record that was made here in Nashville. You know, Travis Tritt, the video for ‘Take It Easy’ and all the Eagles got back together and they’re playing pool down somewhere on Lower Broadway, and it really kinda turned me on to a lot of their songs,” he recalls.
Look for Dierks’ new album to be released sometime around the kickoff of his tour May 12 in Holmdel, New Jersey.
