ABC/Image Group LAWearing aviators and the pilot’s hat from the “Drunk on a Plane” video and not much else, Dierks Bentley started the new year just as he has for more than a decade — by jumping into the icy cold water in Music City.

“Lake jump 2016. This is ridunkulous but we’re doing it anyway,” he says in a video posted to People.com. “I don’t know why we’re doing this, but we do it every year. Why do we do this?”

“We do it to wash off the old and to breathe in the new,” a cigar-smoking fellow jumper answers.

After braving the waters not once but twice, Dierks emerges to continue his pilot metaphor. “2015 is gone. I experienced a little bit of icing on the descent,” he jokes. “Had a safe landing though.”

Once he got dried off and dressed, he finished with some closing thoughts, with his beloved dog Jake by his side. “2016 lake jump is complete. That’s our 15th or 14th lake jump, all done, in the books, freezing cold. Can’t talk. My lips are too cold. See you guys out there, it’s going to be a great year!”

Next up for Dierks, he’ll be near the water once again, when he joins Luke Bryan’s Crash My Playa vacation getaway January 24 in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The two will team up again in April, as they host the ACM Awards together in Las Vegas.
