UMGDon Henley new solo album, Cass County, may feature collaborations with Miranda Lambert, Dolly Parton, Martina McBride and Merle Haggard, but you won’t see the Eagles member vying for a spot on country radio. Though the project is inspired by Henley’s country-leaning roots growing up in northeast Texas, he tells Rolling Stone, “I don’t recognize country music anymore. The bar is not very high right now. I’m not naming any names.”
Henley goes on to say there is a lot of “bad” and “sloppy” songwriting going in modern country music.
“Not that country music is supposed to be an intellectual exercise, but it could be better than it is,” Don adds. “It could have more meat to it than it has currently got.”
Don Henley was a featured vocalist on Trisha Yearwood‘s 1992 hit, “Walkaway Joe.” A multi-artist country tribute album to Henley’s band, Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles, won CMA Album of the Year in 1994.
