ABC/Randy HolmesElton John loves country music, so it’s no surprise that he’d be willing to guest-star on ABC’s country music drama Nashville.

Elton will play himself on the May 18 episode of the series, and will perform with Sam Palladio‘s character Gunnar, an up-and-coming singer/songwriter.  The episode will be the next-to-last one of this current season.  Other upcoming guest stars on the show include Kelsea Ballerini and Thomas Rhett.  In the past, the show has welcomed the likes of Brad Paisley, Florida Georgia Line and Kellie Pickler.

As for how the show managed to land a legendary performer like Elton, well, that’s simple.  His producer, T-Bone Burnett, is married to Callie Khouri, the creator of Nashville.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Elton’s last appearance on a scripted series came in 2013, as part of Lady Gaga‘s ABC Christmas special.
