Image Courtesy Jeremy Cowart/Republic NashvilleFlorida Georgia Line‘s brand-new single, “Dirt,” finds the duo taking a step back from the party anthems that shot them to fame to deliver a sentimental, straight-ahead country song. The lyrics speak to the whole of life from falling in love to welcoming a child to saying goodbye to a loved one.
FGL’s Brian Kelley tells ABC News Radio, “It feels like country music. It feels like the natural progression. Sixth single leading after Here’s to the Good Times, it kinda continues — shows a little maturity, a little different side.”
Brian also sings lead on the second verse of “Dirt” — something he’s never done before on an FGL single. Since his duo partner, Tyler Hubbard, has taken lead vocals on every hit so far, Brian doesn’t see a reason to mess with that winning formula too much.
“That’s kind of the way we’ve branded the thing, and that’s the way it sounds the best, to be honest with you,” Brian says. “This is one of those things we kind of like switching off. We did that back in the day, and two is always better than one.”
Plus, trading vocals on a love song like “Stay” or “Get Your Shine On” just wouldn’t sound right.
Says Brian, “If you’re coming in singing about a girl in the second verse, it can be a little weird if there’s two guys and it’s a duo.”
“Dirt” is the lead single from Florida Georgia Line’s upcoming album, which will feature more of the duo’s classic, rocking sound.
Brian adds, “We can promise you that after this single, the party’s coming.”
Look for Florida Georgia Line’s sophomore album to come out this fall.
