Warner Music NashvilleIt wasn’t that long ago when Dan+Shay debuted their current hit on ABC’s Good Morning America, shortly after weatherperson Ginger Zee revealed she’d be competing on the new season of Dancing with the Stars. Tuesday night, they’ll all be a part of the 22nd-season finale.

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney hadn’t even intended on writing the day they came up with “From the Ground Up,” which is currently knocking on the door to the top 20.

“My grandfather had just passed away before we wrote it, and Shay’s grandfather was in the hospital. It was like this crazy emotional time,” Dan recalls. “We were just chatting, and our grandparents were married for 65-plus years. And it’s funny — my mom sent me a picture of my grandparents’ wedding day and it was exactly 65 years to the day we wrote the song. That was like a kind of freaky coincidence.”

In the end, the more-than-half-century relationships of their ancestors became the launching pad for the romantic ballad that will also inspire a dance on the DWTS finale.

“That kind of love is rare these days. You know, you don’t see that kind of thing and there’s a lot of divorce in the tabloids and just to look at that as an example of hope in our lives and in our own personal relationships is a big deal,” Dan admits.

You can catch Dan+Shay’s primetime performance of “From the Ground Up” Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. The duo’s new album, Obsessed, comes out June 3, the same day they hit the road with Darius Rucker and Michael Ray on the Good for a Good Time Tour.
