Chris Hollo for Grand Ole OpryGarth Brooks spent his Saturday night welcoming Country Music Hall of Famer Bobby Bare back into the Grand Ole Opry fold.

The hitmaker behind tunes like “Detroit City,” “500 Miles,” and “Marie Laveau” had been an Opry member in the ’60s and ’70s. His membership lapsed, however, something that could happen if you failed to make the required number of Opry appearances.

Less than a month earlier, Garth turned out to induct Chris Janson into the Opry, before surprising Bare during his Saturday night set.

“…The Grand Ole Opry is family,” Garth explained. “Family is forever. So Mr. Bare, young man — as my dad would say — it is my honor, it is the Grand Ole Opry’s honor, to officially welcome you back, the great Bobby Bare, to the Grand Ole Opry.”

“I’ve got to tell you that this is quite a surprise,” Janson responded. “I was a member of the Opry for ten years, but then I just drifted away… Thank you to everybody on the Grand Ole Opry.”

Saturday, April 7 also happened to be Bobby Bare’s 83rd birthday.
