Image Courtesy CMAGary Allan found a song he really loved for his next album, but someone else recorded the Motown-inspired track before he could hit the studio. As a result, Gary met up with the writers of the song — Chris Stapleton and Jesse Frasure — to write another song with that soulful vibe he liked in the first song. That’s how Gary came up with his latest single, “Hangover Tonight.”

Gary tells ABC Radio, “I got together with ’em, wrote three songs and all three of ’em made the record.”

“Hangover Tonight” is actually about a guy trying to keep his wits and moderate his drinking as he tries to get somewhere with his love interest. As for a real hangover, Gary admits it’s more difficult to recover from a night of drinking now than it was in his younger days.

“Lord knows I can’t drink or smoke like I could,” Gary admits, “but for me, I gotta run through it. I gotta get up and exercise. Like, I can’t chemical up or chemical down. That just builds on me. So, I have to get up and I have to sweat it out.”

“Hangover Tonight” is the lead single from Gary’s upcoming studio album, due out later this year.
