ABC/Fred LeeBack in August, Eric Church hit number one with “Record Year,” a track that tells its story by name-checking classic albums like Willie Nelson’s Red-Headed Stranger and Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life.

This week, Old Dominion claims their third top-ten with a tune that uses a similar device.

“You know, I had that title, ‘Song for Another Time,’ just from hearing people say ‘That’s a story for another time,’” lead singer Matthew Ramsey recalls. “I just thought for some reason, a song would be cool in there. But I had no clue what the title meant, you know, until I brought it to [the band] and we talked about it. Just through the course of talking about what that title could mean, we came up with the idea of telling this story through song titles. After that, it was just a matter of, you know, trying to pick classic, iconic songs that somehow actually fit the story.”

In the end, OD included at least twenty hits in the lyrics for their latest one, using everything from Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” to Lionel Richie’s “Dancing on the Ceiling.”
