Hunter Hayes is cancelling his Thursday night concert at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, as the nation waits for the grand jury decision on whether a police officer will be charged in the shooting death of unarmed teen Michael Brown in August, a case that has led to protests and unrest in nearby Ferguson, Missouri.

In advance of the announcement of the grand jury’s decision, the governor of Missouri has declared a state of emergency there.

In a statement on his website, Hunter says the decision is “out of respect for Missouri Governor Jay Nixon‘s declaration declaring a state of emergency in Missouri.”

Some heartbroken fans took to Hunter’s website to express sentiments like “PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE reschedule this concert. You don’t understand how upset thousands of girls are because they don’t get to see you. I have been looking forward to this for months and months.”

Ticket holders can get refunds at the point of purchase for this concert, and Hunter assures fans they only need hold out a little longer, promising he’ll be back in St. Louis next year.
