Photo by Quantrell Colbert/NBCWednesday night, Jennifer Nettles reprises her role as Dolly Parton’s mother, Avie Lee, starring in the sequel to last year’s successful TV movie about the Country Music Hall of Famer’s upbringing in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee.

“This is the follow-up to Coat of Many Colors. Christmas of Many Colors furthers Dolly’s story,” Jennifer says. “It furthers the story of her family, and it’s set around Christmas. They’re all true stories based on her childhood. This one is centered around a ‘Gift of the Magi’ somewhat…” she adds, mentioning the holiday short story by O. Henry. “She and her brothers and sisters and her dad got together in order to try to buy her mom a wedding ring.”

Over the course of the two-hour film, Jennifer promises a roller-coaster-ride of emotions.

“There’s fun nativity-scene-craziness at the school and there’s a near-death experience in a mine and there’s a near-death experience in a blizzard, and it’s just, it’s high drama and high laughter!”

You can catch Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love tonight at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
