ABC/Image Group LA Brett Young‘s three-week chart-topper “Like I Loved You” is not only his third #1 in a row, it also happens to be one of the very first songs he wrote when he moved to Nashville.
The California native penned the song with Jesse Lee, who also helped craft Kelsea Ballerini‘s smash “Peter Pan.”
“No record deal, no meetings with labels or anything,” Brett recalls, “and I just felt very fortunate to get in the room with her. But then we had one of those stall-outs, where like two, two-and-a-half hours in, we weren’t writing anything. And we did the ceremonial ‘Let’s go to lunch’ to try to get out of the room.”
“And we were sitting at lunch,” he continues, “and she started telling me one of her — we all have our horror stories in relationships. Within the conversation, she said something like, ‘And then at the end of it, he asked me if we could still be friends.’ And she got so fired up… She started flipping out about it.”
The “In Case You Didn’t Know” hitmaker says that’s when he knew he and Jesse were onto something.
“When I heard the kind of passion she had for that, I went, ‘We gotta go back. We gotta write that song.’ Once I heard her story and I was able to go back in my history and find the experience of mine that I felt like attached to hers, we went back and we wrote it really quick. It’s been one of my favorites on the record the whole time,” he says.
Brett is set to play Luke Bryan’s Crash My Playa getaway vacation on January 17, before heading out with Thomas Rhett on his Life Changes Tour.
