ABC RadioWhen Little Big Town released the lead single from their new album The Breaker last month, little did we know the foursome was colluding with Taylor Swift and keeping a big secret about “Better Man.”

“We said, ‘Hey, you know we’re not just gonna blab this that you wrote this immediately,’” Karen Fairchild recalls. “She said, ‘You know what? That’s the greatest honor as a songwriter you could ever give me is that you don’t want anybody to know that I wrote this.’… “

“The only reason why we didn’t say is because we wanted you to hear the song for what it’s worth,” Karen explains, “and it’s a beautiful song… And at her heart — she is the biggest pop star in the world, but she is a songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee, and she likes to tell a story, and we didn’t want you to have any subtext there, other than to hear this song.”

In the end, Karen feels like Little Big Town’s minor deception paid off.

“We did that, and it had like the biggest add day in our history, and so we were like, ‘Damn, we were right!’” she says, as her band mates laugh in the background. “’This is a good song! You know? Nobody even knows!’

Little Big Town’s new album, The Breaker, comes out February 24, the same day they kick off their residency at Music City’s historic Ryman Auditorium.
