A surgeon in Italy has announced that he’s planning to perform the world’s first human head transplant in 2017.

Dr. Sergio Canavero says that if everything goes “smoothly,” he will be performing the surgery on a Russian patient in China in December 2017.

A 30-year-old man who suffers from a progressive, incurable disease has volunteered to be the guinea pig. His future donor has not been announced. The $11 million procedure will likely take 36 hours, and will require both heads be cut off at the same time with an extra sharp blade.

If the volunteer patient wakes up from a month-long medically-induced coma, he will take powerful immuno-suppressants to prevent the donated body from rejecting his head
