Gaither Music GroupJoey Feek has been asleep for days, her husband Rory wrote on his blog, This Life I Live, on Monday. What is likely to be Joey+Rory‘s final album together, Hymns That Are Important to Us, recently debuted at number one on the country albums chart, just as the singer remains in hospice care for the final stages of cervical cancer.
According to Rory’s post, “her body is shutting down quickly” and “the hospice nurse came again this morning and said Joey will most likely only be with us a few more days…at the most. Not long after [daughter] Indy’s birthday [earlier this month] my wife decided that ‘enough is enough.’ She was ready to stop fighting and she told me so,” he wrote. “She said the flowers would soon be blooming back in Tennessee. It’s time to go home.”
Though they’ve long made their home on the outskirts of Nashville, the couple returned to the house where she grew up in Alexandria, Indiana, after they learned her diagnosis was terminal.
Rory Feek wrote that his wife recently said goodbye to her parents and three sisters. After their tearful conversation, she asked Rory to bring in their 2-year-old daughter Indiana.
“I set our little Indy on Joey’s lap and we all cried with my wife as she told her how much her mama loved her and, ‘…you be a big girl for your papa … and that mama will be watching over you,'” he wrote. “And then she pulled Indiana up and she kissed her. One last kiss.”
He added: “One of the last things Joey said before she drifted into the deep sleep she’s been in for a few days now is, ‘I have no regrets … I can honestly say, that I have done everything I wanted to do and lived the life I always wanted to live.'”
Earlier this month, Joey+Rory were nominated for a Grammy. They’re also up for the Vocal Duo of the Year trophy at the Academy of Country Music Awards next month in Las Vegas.
