ABC/Image Group LA Thursday evening in Nashville, LANCO celebrated their first number one with “Greatest Love Story,” a song written solely by the band’s lead singer, Brandon Lancaster.

The chart-topping tune puts Brandon in the same class as Taylor SwiftZac Brown and Jennifer Nettles — artists who’ve reached the pinnacle of the country chart singing songs they wrote by themselves, namely “Our Song,” “Free” and “Stay,” respectively.

What you may not realize is that’s a rarity these days. In fact, it’s been a decade since anyone accomplished that feat. Brandon admits he had no idea he was setting a new record.

“It’s definitely crazy,” he says. “I think that honestly when I was writing it, I didn’t know how crazy it was… When you get into songwriting, you don’t think, ‘I want to write a song so I can co-write…’ You just have something to say, you have a story to tell and you try to tell it.”

Brandon says lately, it’s occurred to him it’s a phenomenon that could happen to anyone.

“I did write this song before we had a record deal, before we really had anything going for us,” he explains. “And to me, that just kinda proves that anybody — no matter where you are out there — if you have a song, if you have a dream, there could be someone… right now working a job that’s about to get off work and go home tonight and write a song in their apartment and has nothing going for them. And one day, it could be a number one song. So that’s a really incredible and inspiring thing that we’re a part of that.”

LANCO’s debut album, Hallelujah Nights, comes out January 19.
