Charley Gallay/Getty Images for KedsEver since Taylor Swift moved to New York City, she’s been spotted out on the street sporting one stylish outfit after another, and every one of her fashion choices have been relentlessly documented and breathlessly reported on by numerous style blogs and websites. But it turns out that Taylor doesn’t give much thought to her fashion choices at all, and thinks it’s hilarious that people believe that she does.
Speaking to E! at an event to promote her partnership with Keds, Taylor was asked about whether she feels pressure to look great every time she leaves her house, because she’s considered to be a “style icon.” “Oh yeah,” she joked, “It takes me months to plan outfits. I put them on a chart, I dress them on mannequins, and I have, actually, an entire wing of my house that’s dedicated to the planning and the plotting of me wearing different outfits. As a style icon, you have to take yourself very seriously.”
All joking aside, Taylor tells E! that really, getting dressed isn’t that big a deal. “I decide what I’m gonna wear, like, five minutes before I walk out the door and I shop where most girls shop,” she explains. She says she likes Keds because they’re so classic — Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe both wore them, for example — and dressing in that manner cuts down on embarrassment later.
Describing her style as “ladylike,” Taylor explains, “I like to wear pearl earrings, I like red lips. I like things that are kinda classic staples because I figure if I stick to classics, I won’t have as many cringe-worthy moments looking back 25 years from now at my decisions, style-wise.”
While Taylor is friends with many top models, she says it’s some of her other celebrity pals who give her the best fashion advice and inspiration: Girls star Lena Dunham and New Girl star Zooey Deschanel.
“Lena always has really great websites, and shops at great stores, so she always tells me her newest obsession, whether it be a website, or a blog or a new store or something,” Taylor reveals. “She’s really good with that stuff. And Zooey Deschanel is one of the most fashionable people I know.”
