ABC/Image Group LAMaddie & Tae are crossing an item off their bucket list, as Teen Vogue profiles the duo who dared to speak out about the role of women in country music with their breakthrough hit, “Girl in a Country Song.” “This is so awesome,” the two shared on Twitter, along with a link to the article.
“It was us calling out everything we thought was going wrong in country,” Tae Dye tells the magazine. “We wanted women to have that respect they used to have. The songs feel good, but what they were saying was degrading.”
Maddie Marlow admits at first, the two were not quick to label themselves as feminists. “For some reason, the word feminist freaks people out, but when you look it up, all it means is equal opportunity,” she says.
Right now, “Shut Up and Fish” is climbing the chart, as the pair begins to look ahead to their follow-up to Start Here, and Tae says fans needn’t worry their success might tempt them to cross over.
“We’re leaning towards going more country,” she teases.
