ABC/Image Group LA Monday afternoon in Music City, Brett Young took over Broadway’s Nashville Underground, celebrating his third #1 in a row, “Like I Loved You.”
It was important to Brett to have his party there, since singer/songwriter Gavin DeGraw is one of the hot spot’s owners.
“Gavin DeGraw is the reason that I decided I wanted to do music,” the California native revealed. “And he gave me some of the best advice years and years ago before I knew I was gonna get to make records.”
“He was talking about his own career, but it [has] just always stuck with me,” Brett went on. “It was, basically, ‘With every record, your responsibility to your fans is to not change so much that you lose the fans that you have, but to change enough that you can go out and grab some more.’”
That’s timely advice, since Brett is currently working on his next record — and he’s already figured out what he wants that change to be.
“I grew up listening to soul music and R&B music,” he explained. “And so, there’ll be some production stuff where you can hear a little bit of a throwback thing. And that’s what my parents played in my house growing up.”
“We’ve cut three [songs],” Brett continued. “I go back in the studio [Tuesday] to cut three more. That whole sophomore album thing can be scary, but I’m in a good place with it right now. I’m really, really excited to share new music.”
Brett’s final single from his self-titled debut album is the track, “Mercy.”
