Capitol Records NashvilleDierks Bentley‘s going dark this May. His new album, Black, will be in stores May 27, and available for digital pre-order this Friday.
The disc takes its name from the maiden name of Dierks’ wife, Cassidy, but the title also reflects the “ups and downs” of relationships, according to Dierks. “It’s a relationship album….that ends with some self-realization and evolvement,” he says.
“The song ‘Black’ helps set all of that in motion at the top of the album by guiding you into the darkness and the shadows of the night,” Dierks adds. “The same guy who sings ‘Somewhere On A Beach’ winds up growing and having enough perspective to sing something introspective like ‘Different for Girls. By the last song, he’s taking a look back on love and life.”
The disc features guest appearances by a variety of female singers, including pop/rock star Elle King, plus Maren Morris, Hillary Lindsey, Jessi Alexander and Natalie Hemby. New Orleans musician Trombone Shorty also makes an appearance on a song called “Mardi Gras.”
Dierks says it was important for him to offer a “female perspective” on the disc, hence the guest stars. “It makes it a conversation between a guy and a girl. Sometimes it’s harmonious and sometimes it’s two people clashing, but it’s always there,” he explains.
