1941

The United States entered World War Two as Congress declared war on Japan 

This announcement came a day after their attack on Pearl Harbor 

1963

19-year-old Frank Sinatra, Jr. was “kidnapped” from Harrah’s South Lodge in Lake Tahoe  

After Frank Sr. paid a ransom of $240,000 in marked bills, police arrested two ex-classmates of Frank Jr.’s sister

It was discovered that Frank Sinatra Jr. cooperated with his abductors in their sinister plot!

1980

John Lennon was shot and killed outside his New York City apartment building, The Dakota  

Mark David Chapman, a former mental patient who had earlier that day asked for and received Lennon’s autograph, was arrested and convicted for the killing

John Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, together with New York’s officials, set up a permanent memorial to her husband: a section of Central Park, opposite The Dakota, named Strawberry Fields

(Chapman is still in prison.  He’s been eligible for parole several times, but he’s been denied every time so far.  His next parole hearing is in August of 2016.)

1984

“Captain Kangaroo” last aired on CBS after 29 years

It will be forever immortalized by The Statler Brothers’ & Eric Heatherly in the song Flowers On The Wall

Counting flowers on the wall, that don’t bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty one
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
