PINE TAR BAT DAY

1983

Kansas City Royals’ George Brett slammed a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Royals a 5-4 lead over the New York Yankees!

New York Yankees Manager Billy Martin complained there was too much pine tar on the bat used by Brett. The distance limit for pine tar on a bat handle is 18 inches. The umpires measured the bat, using home plate as a measuring stick, and they decided that Brett did have too much pine tar…so they called him out!

The president of the American League, Lee McPhail, later reversed the umpires’ decision on the pine tar incident and ruled that the game was suspended — with the Royals leading, 5-4.

The game was completed 3 1/2 weeks later, on August 18, with the Royals winning 5-4.

The bat is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown
