Getty Images via ABCThomas Rhett heads into the week of CMA Music Festival in an enviable position. Not only does he have the number-one country song in America — it’s also his sixth chart-topper in a row.

“It’s just been such a whirlwind, man, going from ‘Die a Happy Man’ to ‘T-Shirt,’” he says. “It sort of just like happened. We didn’t even really announce it as a single and it just started to get played, and we were just like, ‘Alright I guess that’s the next single.’ So it’s been funny how that one’s been playing out.”

It didn’t surprise Thomas Rhett at all when “T-Shirt” took on a life of his own, because it’s one he’s loved for a long time.

“You can ask anybody at my label, my family, man. I’ve been wanting to put ‘T-Shirt’ out since like 2014. It’s been one of those songs that I really wanted to cut in the early stages and then we didn’t, but I always loved it, and so now it’s just like a song that’s been my favorite for like three years.”

Look for TR to perform “T-Shirt” Wednesday night on the CMT Music Awards, before he plays Nissan Stadium Sunday night in Nashville. He already has his next single ready to go too — a tune tailor-made for summertime, titled “Vacation.”
