Randee St. Nicholas“I feel like a Little Leaguer that found himself at bat in the World Series and knocked it out of the park!” That was Charlie Daniels’ explanation of his mood Sunday, as he was inducted into the 2016 class of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Jamey Johnson and Trace Adkins paid tribute to the leader of the Charlie Daniels’ Band, performing his biggest hits, “Long Haired Country Boy” and “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” respectively.

Trisha Yearwood, on the other hand, delivered something unexpected, performing the little-known song “It Hurts Me.”

“I’m doing a ballad that he wrote that was originally recorded by Elvis, so I’m kinda the wild card, a little bit,” she laughed. “And I’m a huge Elvis fan, and I knew the song, but I didn’t know Charlie wrote it. So I don’t think people are expecting somebody to come out and sing a ballad for Charlie, but that’s what I’m gonna do!”

Fellow Hall of Famer Brenda Lee did the honors, as the esteemed institution welcomed Charlie into its ranks.
