Michael Becker/FOX This weekend, as Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood rolled into Columbus, Ohio, for three more dates on their ongoing world tour, Trisha officially has a new hit on her hands. “Broken” is already climbing the Adult Contemporary and Christian charts, but country fans are also clamoring for the moving ballad from her performance in Fox’s The Passion — and it all started on the road.

“I come out and do about 20 or 30 minutes and do my own little set in the middle of Garth’s show every night,” the two-time CMA Female Vocalist of the Year says. “I stick to, you know, ‘She’s in Love with the Boy’ and ‘XXX’s and OOO’s’ and ‘How Do I Live,” songs that people know really well. The first city that we played after The Passion was in Canada and somebody came with a sign. People bring their signs of songs they want to hear, that’s kinda what they do at the Garth shows. And I saw somebody hold up a sign for ‘Broken,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh!'”

The first time it happened, the Georgia native confesses it caught her off-guard.

“The band didn’t know it. I told the audience, I’m like, ‘Well, we have a track, let’s try it,'” she recalls. “It was just really powerful. It’s really interesting to see because the song itself, whether you know it or not, if you’re listening, it builds and builds. And you see that happen in the audience. I don’t do it every single night, but I do it if somebody brings a sign, which has happened almost every night, I’ll try to do it. And we’ve learned it. Now the band knows it. So now it’s got a really powerful live feel to it.”

Country fans get their next chance to hear the live version of Trisha’s hit “Broken” next weekend when she and her husband play Des Moines, Iowa. It’s one of five songs she sings on The Passion soundtrack, which is available now.
