Joseph LlanesFor the first time in her career, Wynonna is recording with a band. Her new record Wynonna & the Big Noise, featuring her husband and former Highway 101 member Cactus Moser, comes out February 12. The lead singer of legendary country duo the Judds also shares the spotlight with other vocalists like the Eagles Timothy B. Schmit and Jason Isbell on the album’s dozen tracks.

To describe the kind of music they make, Wy uses phrases like “vintage yet modern” and a “return the well.” Most of the project was recorded on her family farm just outside of Nashville, with the Big Sound playing on the tracks instead of studio musicians.

“It creates more energy, more excitement and definitely a more unique sound to have our actual band play,” producer and drummer Cactus says.

“Like a garage band we all get in a room, basically knee to knee in a circle, and we jam until it feels amazing,” Wynonna says of the process. “By the time we push record we are already jacked up because we have practiced and practiced until we know we are rocking. The end result is even better than when we started out because we’re free to just play and enjoy ourselves.”

As for the songs, the respected vocalist says she stripped herself of worrying about fitting into a specific format and instead simply picked songs she loves. In the end, she says the finished product is her “favorite thing I’ve done so far.”
