About 600 dogs have been cloned so far by scientists at Sooam Biotech, a company in South Korea. The company developed the technology to create cloned canines, and it’s the only business in the world that does it for consumers.

The process costs pet owners $100,000. People send off skin cells from their current dog. Most of the dogs cloned so far have been for grieving pet owners.

Some have been for police agencies looking for special skills such as bomb-sniffing.

But not everyone thinks this idea is so great. To clone a dog you need to use a lot of other dogs to serve as egg donors and surrogates, which means many dogs are undergoing surgical procedures.

The company says most of the time the process doesn’t work, so it takes many attempts to produce a single clone.
