Sure, that’s a click-baity headline, but it works because the article comes from HuffPost.

The website that just laid off nearly 50 people asked five nutrition experts to rank 19 types of bread according to how healthy they are. Shockingly, the whole grain lobby managed to get whole grain on top. Of course it’s in a tie with whole wheat, but that’s only because Big Whole Wheat has deep pockets, also.

The least healthy types are led by bagels and white bread.

Here’s the rundown of the most healthiest breads:

  1. Whole grain/whole wheat. BUT only if the packaging says “100% whole…”. Otherwise, you might as well just get white bread.
  2. Ezekiel or “sprouted grain bread”. Whatever that is.
  3. Sourdough.
  4. Rye
  5. Multigrain

The least healthiest are:

  1. Bagels. Or Bag-els if you’re name is Britta. She’s the worst.
  2. White bread. Still the superior grilled cheese sandwich bread, however.
  3. Flour tortillas. Now we’re stretching the definition of bread.
  4. White pita bread. And RIP Pita Pit in Aggieville.
  5. Brioche. That reminds me, there’s a recipe for brioche on Delish that only takes four and a half hours. Been meaning to try it. The others I’ve found need over a day to do. I don’t know if it’s any good, but hey! Bread in a sixth of the time!
