Officers first filed a report at approximately 2:26 p.m. March 30th. A 22-year-old woman reported that an unknown suspect stole her identity and accumulated debt in her name. The estimated loss associated with that case is $20,000.

Later that evening, at approximately 7:07 p.m., officers filed another fraud report. A 34-year-old woman reported that an unknown suspect took out multiple loans in her name. The estimated loss in that case is $13,900.

Anyone with information related to either case is asked to contact RCPD or Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Tips can be submitted anonymously and may qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

As Riley County officials map out the budget framework for a new county administrator position, questions swirl over how to account for such reorganization in the 2027 budget cycle.

Budget and finance officer Brittany Phillips on Monday asked commissioners for direction on who should develop the operational budget as staff prepare early projections for the budget calendar.

“If I can at least draft something to a department that’s of a similar size, then that can give us something to kind of work with through the budget process, instead of just throwing … ‘Here’s $200,000 for your three Cs, figure it out,’” she said.

Manhattan police are investigating a series of vehicle thefts and attempted thefts reported over the weekend, many involving similar damage to steering columns, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Officers filed seven separate reports between March 20th and March 22nd across the city, with total reported losses exceeding $40,000.

On March 22nd, officers filed a report at approximately 10:26 a.m. in the 700 block of Pebblebrook Circle after a 26-year-old man reported his 2018 Kia Soul had been stolen. The vehicle, valued at approximately $10,200, was later recovered.

On March 21st, officers filed multiple reports, including an incident at approximately 9:23 a.m. in the 3000 block of Kimball Avenue, where a 25-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect broke into her 2018 Kia Optima and damaged the steering column in an attempted theft, causing about $2,000 in damage.

Later that day, at approximately 5:13 p.m., a 32-year-old man reported in the 3000 block of James Avenue that an unknown suspect broke into his 2016 Hyundai Elantra, damaged the steering column and attempted to steal the vehicle. The estimated loss in that case is $4,000.

At approximately 6:38 p.m. March 21st, officers responded to the 2700 block of Vinewood Place, where a 63-year-old woman reported her 2018 Kia Soul had been stolen. The estimated loss was $6,000, and the vehicle has since been recovered.

On March 20th, officers filed four reports, beginning at approximately 8:53 a.m. in the 400 block of Walters Drive, where a 25-year-old woman reported an attempted theft of her 2019 Kia Forte, including damage to the steering column. The estimated loss was $2,000.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., a 35-year-old man reported his gray 2018 Nissan Altima had been stolen from the 1400 block of Cambridge Place, with an estimated loss of $8,000.

At approximately 12:06 p.m., officers responded to the 4100 block of Spook Rock Way, where a 20-year-old man reported his 2020 Kia Optima had been stolen. The estimated loss was $9,000, and the vehicle has since been recovered.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across northeast Kansas Friday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Forecasters say storms could begin developing between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., initially forming as individual storms or supercells before transitioning into a line of storms later in the evening. That line is expected to move east-southeast through the region and exit the area around midnight.

The entire region could see storms if cloud cover clears enough to allow additional warming during the day. Meteorologists say the most likely area for early supercell development is trending toward north-central Kansas before storms organize into a larger system as a cold front pushes through.

Damaging winds and large hail appear to be the primary threats. Hail up to 1 to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts as high as 60 to 70 mph are possible. A few tornadoes cannot be ruled out, though that risk remains lower. Flooding potential is also considered relatively low unless storms repeatedly move over the same areas.

Forecasters say confidence in storm timing and overall development is medium to high, but the exact severity will depend on how quickly clouds clear during the day and how storms interact once they form.

A Manhattan man was arrested Friday afternoon at the Riley County Law Enforcement Center on multiple counts of violating a protection order, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Officers filed a report at approximately 2:14 p.m. Feb. 20th in the 1000 block of South Seth Child Road, the location of the Riley County Law Enforcement Center. A 24-year-old woman was listed as the victim, and a 29-year-old man was identified as the suspect.

Tyrell Harper, 29, of Manhattan, was arrested at approximately 2:53 p.m. on 15 counts of violating a protection order.

Harper was issued a total bond of $15,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.

Following a national search, Kansas State University announced its appointment of Ashfaq Khokhar as dean of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering, effective Aug. 2.

“Dr. Khokhar brings exceptional leadership experience, growth-minded vision and high-quality teaching, research and engagement to K-State in the role of dean for the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering,” said Jesse Perez Mendez, provost and executive vice president. “I look forward to working with him to advance the college and university’s strategic vision.”

As the chief academic and administrative officer for the college, and LeRoy C. and Aileen H. Paslay Chair in Engineering, Khokhar will work to grow the college’s teaching, research, service, extension and engagement.

NBAF, the federal animal disease lab in Manhattan, is being exempted from the federal hiring freeze and is looking to fill 150 positions, officials said Wednesday.

Alfonso Clavijo, director of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, said lab, which is the only biosafety level-4 lab in the country that can house large livestock, told local leaders at the Regional Growth Summit on Friday he has received the green flag to begin hiring.

“We have a unique opportunity at NBAF,” Clavijo said. “We are unique for the federal government and for USDA; we are being exempted from the hiring freeze, and we are fully operating at this facility to get all the staff.”

One person was taken to the hospital Tuesday evening following a two-vehicle crash at a busy Manhattan intersection.

Riley County Police say officers responded around 6:51 p.m. Jan. 20 to the intersection of Tuttle Creek Boulevard and Bluemont Avenue. A 2017 Kia Niro driven by 24-year-old Anthony Corral of Manhattan collided with a 2014 Buick Encore driven by 22-year-old Adam Hopper, also of Manhattan.

Corral was transported to Via Christi for treatment of minor injuries.
