The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution is ratified

Amendment XV prohibits each government in the United States from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen’s “race, color, or previous condition of servitude” (i.e., slavery)

1913

The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified.

It authorized the power to impose and collect income tax.

2002

Super Bowl XXXVI

The New England Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams, 20-17 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans

It was the team’s third Super Bowl, with this being their first win. New England QB Tom Brady was voted the game’s MVP.

Rock ‘n’ Roll singers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson died in a plane crash today along with the pilot when their chartered plane went down near Mason City, Iowa.

The deaths are immortalized in the The Day the Music Died by Don McLean.
