Today marks the 54th Earth Day celebration, the annual event to raise awareness of protecting our environment.
This has, traditionally, included calls to recycle, as well as lifestyle changes like reusable grocery bags. However, a new study is calling for A.I. to get in on the fun, at least in hotel showers.
The research, published in the Journal of Travel Research, advocates the usage of smart shower cubicles in hotels that would provide tourists with continuous feedback on their shower length.
Yeah. Your hotel shower could soon be watching you.
“Many tourist hotspots worldwide face unprecedented water stress levels, and we are trying to do our part to help the tourism industry use less water,” Dr. Pablo Pereira-Doel, Lecturer at the University of Surrey and Water program co-lead at the Surrey Institute for Sustainability, said. “Our research demonstrates that guests in tourist accommodations take shorter showers with enabling technology, reducing water, energy, and carbon emissions.”
The technology already exists and was created by the Danish company Aguardio. The sensors in the unit detect water sound, motion, temperature and humidity to identify showers in real-time. The duration was then fed back to a display in the form of a timer.
According to the study, using A.I. in this manner could, potentially, reduce shower lengths by 25 percent.
Or 100 percent because who wants to shower knowing the SHOWER is watching you?
