As we welcome in 2021 and say goodbye to the Year That Must Not Be Named, we can also take the opportunity to say goodbye to a number of phrases and and words from the last 12 months, as well.
Lake Superior State University has put out their annual list of words and phrases to banish. Included on the list is everything we, as a people, have been sick of since, roughly March of last year. The second March. Which is normally April.
- COVID-19 (Editor’s Note: LSSU lumped all variations of COVID and coronavirus into one.)
- Social distancing
- “We’re all in this together.”
- “Out of an abundance of caution”
- “In these uncertain times”
- Pivot
- Unprecedented
- Karen (Someone’s getting a nasty email…)
- Sus (It’s short for ‘suspicious.’ We had to look it up, also.)
- “I know, RIGHT?”
Now, obviously, some of these are going to stick around well into 2021. If we could exercise “pivot” and “sus” out of our vernacular, though, that would be great. Otherwise, I’m going to have to sic a Karen on you.
