It’s that magically festive time of the year: stockings by the fireplace, eggnog, beautifully wrapped gifts, and the sworn enemy of our feline friends…the Christmas tree!

Well just in time for the holidays, here are some tips to help you pet-proof your tree.

1) Start by putting any breakable or keepsake ornaments higher on the tree, making them much harder to get to for Fluffy or Fido. And consider using ribbons or twist ties which make them harder to knock down.

2) Get cord organizers or covers to keep those wires out of sight and less of a temptation to be chewed on. And turn the lights off if you’re not going to be home.

3) Cover the water bowl in the base of the tree…again, less of a tempting draw for dogs and cats. A small garden fence is even more protection.

4) Last, consider an artificial tree which won’t have that intoxicating pine scent. Bonus: artificial trees don’t shed!
