As we enter the 10,000th day of the Pandemic (time flows different during COVID), someone on the Internet discovered the perfect song to sum up where we are, as a people.

The Muppets had a movie come out in 1996 called Muppet Treasure Island, which is one of their more underrated ones. Most remember The Muppet Christmas Carol, or even The Great Muppet Caper before that, but Treasure Island deserves better.

Ahem.

Anyway, one of the songs on the soundtrack is “Cabin Fever”, which is set when the crew of the pirate ship is adrift for days due to a lack of wind. Needless to say, they go a little crazy.

Check it out!

Did you get your COVID-19 vaccine? Did you then post your card on social media?

If the answer’s yes, then congratulations! You probably attracted a scammer!

The Better Business Bureau has revealed that they’ve seen an uptick in identity theft due to people sharing their vaccination cards on their socials. Those cards include your full name, birth date, and where you got your vaccine at, which means the scammers also have access to your hometown.

Not only that, but in Great Britain, enterprising scammers also were selling fake vaccination cards on eBay and TikTok. Which is another reason to ban TikTok, but that’s another president.

For safe sharing on social media, the BBB recommends:

Share your vaccine sticker or use a profile frame, instead. Facebook just so happens to already have one.

Review your security settings. Do it on all your social platforms to make sure you know what you’re sharing and with whom.

Be wary of answering popular social media prompts. We get it. It’s fun to be involved with the latest viral trend. But joining in on showing your vaccine card, or listing all the cars you’ve owned, or any of your favorite things, for that matter, just give scammers clues as to your password. Unless you use the ridiculous Google recommended one that’s fine if I’m only on Chrome, Google, but if I’m trying to log into Netflix on my Roku, I’m not using FU&*-012Li28MMI5. No way I’m remembering that.

If you have been a victim of fraud, the BBB has resources you can use at bbb.org.

I mean, that’s essentially what they’re saying.

The Centers for Disease Control issued a few tips for a safe Super Bowl weekend. Yes, pandemic and all, but COME ON.

Host a virtual Super Bowl Party. “Wear clothing or decorate your home with your favorite team’s logo or colors, make appetizers or snacks with the people you live with to enjoy while watching the game and share the recipes with your friends and family, or start a text group with other fans to chat about the game while watching.”

Attend an outdoor viewing party where viewers can sit 6 feet apart. “Use a projector screen to broadcast the game and sit at least 6 feet away from people you don’t live with.”

The outdoor viewing party sounds like a great idea, until you look at the forecast for Manhattan on Sunday (Sunny and a high of 21).

Then there’s this if you’re actually going to go to a party.

“Have conversations with the host ahead of time to understand expectations for celebrating together, bring your own food, drinks, plates, cups, utensils, and condiment packets, wear a mask indoors and outdoors, and avoid shouting, cheering loudly, or singing. Clap, stomp your feet, or bring (or provide) hand-held noisemakers instead.”

Oh, and they say don’t drink, because you do stupid things when you drink that will just spread COVID. Which, fine. Yes, CDC, you’re not wrong.

But bringing my own food, no drinking, can’t make any noise…that sounds like a family reunion when I was six.

Might as well just stay at home. At least then, you don’t have to put on real pants.

Google put out it’s annual Year in Search, with the top searches for 2020 not really much of a surprise.

Well, unless you forgot certain things happened during 2020, which is understandable.

The top 10 searches for the year:

Election Results

Coronavirus

Kobe Bryant

Coronavirus updates

Zoom

Who is winning the election

Naya Rivera (The Glee actress who passed away in July)

Chadwick Boseman

Playstation 5

One of those things is not like the other, one of those things just doesn’t belong.

Some other searches of note include “where is Kansas City” being in the top “where is” search questions. The top “how to” search was “how to make hand sanitizer”.

Weirdly, the top “why” question was “why were chainsaws invented?”

Don’t even know what to do with that one.

In the back of our minds, we knew this was coming, but it still sucks.

The Heartland Stampede has officially been cancelled for 2020. The festival, the first under the new moniker after spending 23 years as Country Stampede, was to be held June 25-27, 2020 in Topeka. Luke Combs, Toby Keith and Cody Johnson were to have been the headliners.

“From the bottom of our hearts, we are sorry for keeping your hopes up that we could make it happen,” Stampede organizers said in a statement to fans on social media. “Every effort was made for a possible reschedule date, but dates and artists were not available. This is not the course of action we want to take, however with the new government COVID19 recovery measures indicating mass gatherings will not be permitted, and in times of unprecedented uncertainty, this is now our only viable option.”

The team behind Stampede has announced that they will move forward with a 2021 edition, which is planned for June 24-26, also at Heartland Park. No headliners or act information is available at present. If you wish to rollover your tickets from this year to next, Stampede has announced that will be allowed. They will also honor refund requests. Information on how to do both can be found here.

Below is the full statement from Heartland Stampede’s Instagram page.

Hospitals are desperately trying to keep up with the influx of cases of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus.

Dr. David Pauls, a general surgeon with Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan has volunteered to become the hospital’s senior triage officer. Surgeons like Dr. Pauls are trained in triage through mass disaster situations.

“Fortunately I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve had to do a major, big type triage situation. Part of it is that I’ve been here for a long time. It’s my way of doing what I can to help the community,” he said.

While the situation isn’t dire yet at the local level, there are growing concerns that medical communities across the country don’t have the resources available for a mass influx of cases. New York City, largely seen as the epicenter for the pandemic reported over 47,000 cases by Thursday with over 1,300 deaths. Earlier this week, health officials said Riley County and surrounding areas likely won’t see a peak in the number of cases until late April to early May.

“There’s so much we don’t know. We don’t know how many cases we really have. We know it’s very infectious but we don’t know what those hard numbers are. We have lots of predictions for numbers of cases and unfortunately numbers of deaths but those predictions all vary by different magnitude,” he said.

Pauls says right now the effort is to slow down the spread so as not to overwhelm medical facilities.

“If we can keep those numbers of cases low, then we don’t get into a situation where we reach that ceiling on our resources and have to start making harder decisions as to who gets what treatment,” he said.

Dr. Pauls is on the board of directors for the Center for Bioethics and Culture Network, based in the San Francisco area. The group focuses addresses bioethical issues profoundly impacting humanity, especially in the lives of the most vulnerable populations.

He cites the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, which killed 168 people and injured hundreds more as a regional example of when a triage was used. In situations like that he says patients are categorized into three levels – immediate, urgent situations that have to be treated within minutes to save a life. The next segment would be those that are more urgent but don’t require an immediate, within an hour of treatment. The lowest tier would include those with minor injuries that can wait (i.e. cuts, scrapes, bruises). In some situations he says there is what’s called the “expectant” category.

“These are people who have such overwhelming injuries that the likelihood of survival is low. Then unfortunately if you get into a situation where you have limited resources, those are the people who you have to try to keep them comfortable, try to do what you can for them, but they’re not going to get the maximal therapy that other people might,” he said.

Kansas has guidelines in place for use of modified health protocols in acute care hospitals during public health emergencies, established in 2009, which was last revised in 2013. Dr. Pauls says it was established to standardize guidelines between all hospitals so that a uniform level of care can be provided to everyone, using what’s called the SOFA score (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score)

“So that’s just a way of judging how sick a patient is and depending on the score and some other medical issues, you can assign a priority to them,” he said.

Fortunately he says we’re not in a place where those decisions are currently having to be made, but it does emphasize the importance of staying at home, minimizing risk of exposure to, not only COVID-19, but also the risk for unexpected injury from other incidents (i.e. a motor vehicle accidents, fires or other life-threatening circumstances). If a hospital can’t treat a patient locally and that patient has to be transferred, there exists the possibility that it may become increasingly difficult to find a hospital that can treat that patient if they too are overwhelmed.
