1888

Following a quarrel with Paul Gauguin, Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh cut off part of his own earlobe

Van Gogh arrived at a brothel called House of Tolerance and asked for “Rachel”…He then handed her his ear, saying “Keep this and treasure it.” Then he disappeared.

Police went to the man’s address the next morning and found him lying in bed and giving almost no sign of life. artist was admitted to hospital as an emergency case.

This didn’t kill him, however…he committed suicide in 1890

1978 

Michigan becomes one of the first states to raise its drinking age to 21 over concerns about high school students drinking and driving

The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 (23 U.S.C. § 158) was passed on July 17, 1984. It punished every state that allowed persons below 21 years to purchase and publicly possess alcoholic beverages by reducing its annual federal highway apportionment by ten percent.

1997

Terry Nichols was convicted by a Denver jury on charges of conspiracy and involuntary manslaughter in the 1995 federal building bombing in Oklahoma City

The bomb killed 168 people
