Sam sang for almost two hours, doing his three number ones as well as his current single, “Break Up in a Small Town.” He also covered the hits he wrote for other stars, like Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight” and Keith Urban’s “Cop Car.” Newcomer Cam joined him on the stage outside the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for a duet version of her hit “Burning House.”

One of the high points of the night came when Sam introduced one of his earliest champions to the crowd, Katelyn Carter, who gave away copies of his first tape of songs to anyone who’d listen. This week, MCA Nashville reissued Between the Pines:  Acoustic Mixtape as a digital download.

Next up, Sam vies for three trophies at Wednesday’s CMA Awards. He’s up for New Artist, Single and Song of the Year. You can see the show live from Nashville at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
