1961

The Antarctic Treaty, signed by twelve nations in 1959, finally took effect on this day.

The twelve original signers of the treaty were Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The treaty guaranteed that the continent of Antarctica would be used for peaceful, scientific purposes only.

Kansas native Jim Ryun set a record record in the mile – 3:51.1!


The record stood for eight years!

The world mile record now stands at 3:43, and is held by a guy named Hicham El Guerrouj

1995 

The Los Angeles Raiders moved from LA back to Oakland

The Raiders abandoned Oakland in 1982 when they moved to the Los Angeles Coliseum, but then they ditched Los Angeles when they returned to Oakland in 1995.

And now, they want to move again!

Blame the owner, Al Davis.

Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt’s penis with a butcher knife — while he was sleeping.

It was surgically reattached.

Lorena said that she chopped off John’s penis because he had forced himself on her.

 In Arizona, aerialist Nik Wallenda completed a quarter mile tightrope walk over the Little Colorado River Gorge.
