ABC/Image Group LARight now, Sam Hunt‘s latest hit is on the verge of becoming his latest number one. Even though “Break Up in a Small Town” has yet to claim the top spot on the major charts, it’s already been the most-streamed country song online for the past ten weeks in a row — not bad for a last-minute addition to Sam’s Grammy-nominated Montevallo album.
“‘Breakup in a Small Town’ is one of the last songs I wrote before we finished the record,” he recalls. “I wrote it with Zach Crowell and Shane McAnally, and it’s a song that, sort of the title explains everything you would expect about the song.”
Though the contender for this year’s Best New Artist Grammy isn’t opening up about any particular breakups that might’ve helped bring the song to life, it’s probably safe to assume his upbringing in Cedartown, Georgia definitely played a role.
“It’s just about growing up in a small town and you break up with a guy or a girl, and you think you’re not gonna see ‘em again. You think they’re long gone, but then you realize there’s just so many streets and so many lights. You hang out with all the same people. They’re the first person you see when you leave the house, so it’s kind of hard to get away from ‘em,” he says.
This week, we learned Sam will team up with Carrie Underwood for a special performance during this year’s Grammys. You can catch the show live from Los Angeles February 15 on CBS.
