Nancy Seltzer & Assoc.This past weekend, Garth Brooks played until close to 2 a.m. each night for sell-out crowds in Phoenix. Then Sunday, he and wife Trisha Yearwood were back in Nashville in time to sing for the Oak Ridge Boys‘ induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Maybe that’s what put the CMA Entertainer of the Year nominee in a philosophical mood.
“You know, I don’t think it matters what you do. You can be a plumber, electrician, entertainer, athlete — it’s how you affect people,” he reflects. “That’s it. That’s what separates the great ones from the rest of us, man. It’s just, are you affecting people?”
Having played for more than three million fans since he started his World Tour last year, Garth admits it’s a standard he certainly applies to himself.
“Are you affecting people with your music? Are you affecting people with your lyrics? Do they leave that concert hall feeling like they’ve changed in, hopefully some way, a better way? Or [in] how they’re going to treat people when they walk out? All that stuff, is a responsibility on your shoulders as an entertainer,” he believes.
This weekend, Garth takes his show to Salt Lake City, Utah, before returning home to Music City to vie for the top prize at the CMA Awards, Wednesday, November 4 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
