EMI Records NashvilleAs Brothers Osborne‘s first full-length album comes out today, TJ and John have managed to accomplish a rare feat. They managed to grab their first Grammy nod before Pawn Shop even came out. Meanwhile, their nominated song, “Stay a Little Longer” is at number four and still climbing.
In addition to that, their debut effort boasts another track that’s generating serious buzz on social media, “Loving Me Back,” with guest vocals from CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Lee Ann Womack. Still, TJ says it’s a huge undertaking to try to sum up who you are musically in one album — and it doesn’t happen without a little second guessing.
“Your first album is your entire life’s work put into one,” he reflects. “Clearly most of it is pretty newer stuff, just by design. But it’s really, really tough. It’s a lot that goes into it. It’s a lot of shows, a lot of songwriting, a lot of trial and error. And still you come all the way up to this point and you’re putting a record out and it’s finished and it’s submitted and it’s getting printed as we speak, and you still are like man, there are things you, maybe a different song you would’ve put on there or something else you could’ve represented.”
For Brothers Osborne, the process was made even more complicated by the fact that the siblings work to cultivate a very diverse sound.
“John and I don’t really do the same thing over and over,” TJ observes, “So we wanted to have a record where it was every song was something new, something different, but wasn’t so different that it didn’t have a theme to it or sound like it didn’t relate to one another. So it’s a really wild process and it’s so challenging to take everything that’s happened in my musical career and John’s and then put that into 11 songs and put it on a disc and put it out there. You just have to have a little leap of faith there.”
TJ and John’s current leap of faith also features their debut single, “Rum.” They’ll find out if they take home the Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance February 15 when the awards air live on CBS. Meanwhile, they continue to play the All Time High Tour with their pal Jon Pardi.
